Sale of meat banned in Mansa Devi Temple vicinity: Punjab High Court.

The Punjab High Court, in Anahita Handa and others v/s State of Haryana and others (CWP- 7660-2023),held the sale of meat to banned in the vicinity of the Mansa Devi Temple Complex. The judgement was presided by Honourable Mr. Justice Vinod Bhardwaj.

FACTS OF THE CASE:
An order by the State Government was issued in this regard, of banning meat in the vicinity of the aforementioned temple, located in the Panchkula district of Haryana State. The court stayed this particular order. In 2022, the Additional Chief Secretary declared the demarcated area near the Mansa Devi Temple as a ‘holy area’. This declaration led to the prohibition of the slaughtering, sale and purchase of meat and meat products within the said area. The petitioner meat sellers challenged this notification and moved the court arguing against the order. The petitioners further argued of being in possession of the required licences for the sale of meat in the vicinity and violation of their right to carry on the business/ occupation of their choice.
JUDGEMENT:
The court took in regard the argument put forward by the petitioners. The court took in cognisance the rights of the petitioner with respect to the business being carried and licenses procured. Against this backdrop, a notice was issues to the State and Municipal Corporation, Panchkula for their responses.
